M.Sc. Edgar Castañeda

Edgar Castañeda is an ecologist with a master's degree in biodiversity management and renewable energy technologies. He did his academic studies in Nicaragua, Chile, Spain and Germany. he has worked with migratory bird monitoring stations to determine winter survival rates, in collaboration with the Bird Population Institute in Point Reyes, California and with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Foundation. He did an internship at the research station in the North Cascade National Park, USA. He also coordinated biodiversity monitoring programs in national parks in Nicaragua involving locals of rural communities. He published an undergraduate thesis conducting “a study of Pacific Parakeet populations in the Chocoyero Wildlife Refuge” where he was director for four years at the beginning of the refuge. I actively participated in the project for the declaration of important bird areas in Nicaragua and was co-author of the first list of birds of Nicaragua in its first and second editions. Also, I was co-authored publications such as: "Zoological Biodiversity of Nicaragua", 2001, "The use of birds as a tool for conservation", 2005. He was a speaker at TEDx "Challenges for the solution of environmental problems", 2017. He has also worked as a consultant in both the public and private sector (United Nations, German Cooperation Agency, European Union, etc.), conducting environmental assessments of development projects and in Environmental Impact Assessments for geothermal projects in the volcanic chain of Nicaragua, wind energy projects, electrical transmission systems. Together with a team of data analysts and electrical engineers from Multiconsult company, he participated in the analysis of the economic impacts of the value chains of renewable energy investment projects in the Dominican Republic. He is also passion birder an avid nature photographer. he has won two Central American photography contests in 2001 and a Latin American contest in 2000. He has worked for the last 10 years as a tour leader in Central America for tour companies such as: Road Scholar (USA), Pioneer Expeditions (England), Va Pues Tour (Nicaragua), International Expedition (USA), Peak DMC (Australia) and Intrepid (USA). He is also master diving instructor certifying more than 300 divers and accumulating more than 3500 dives and first aid trainer. He has organized and conducted more than 10 naturalist courses for tour guides in Nicaragua. Also, has worked on emergency and evacuation plans for television productions for international television such as Discovery Channel and as a camera man for local television companies. Currently He is a professor of ecology and natural resource management at UAM College. He founded the naturalism schools’ program where he has trained young people to develop knowledge of biodiversity and entrepreneurship programs.

M.Sc. Emilie Paris-Jodoin

Émilie Paris-Jodoin is a wildlife biologist, science teacher, and education program manager with a college degree in biology and a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, both from Canadian institutions. She is also an Emergency First Responder, a Divemaster, and is fluent in English, French, and Spanish. She is an expert in collection and interpretation of biological and ecological data, in development of environmental and scientific education programs, and in teaching a broad range of sciences and mathematics at the secondary, college and university levels. She is currently dedicating her time building up education program for young people. She is a cofounder of The Naturalism School, which is a Non-profit organization that promotes environmental knowledge, learning and awareness among youth in rural communities in Nicaragua, Central America. She currently is a key developer of a successful Naturalist program aiming to educate young people (age range from 5 to 16 years old) about many aspects of nature, biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecology, that was launched in Central America in 2021 and is still ongoing under the umbrella of The Naturalism School. She also has significant experience with geographic information systems, in statistical analysis, in governance processes for conservation purposes and wildlife management, and in development of public-private partnerships. She worked as a research assistant in Canadian and French universities, and managed several environmental projects on Flora & Fauna, wildlife management and impact mitigation while working for the Regional Environmental Council of Centre-du-Québec in Canada. She also worked as a consultant in biodiversity, ecosystems, and geographic information systems in Central America.

Lic. William Muñoz

William Muñoz holds a degree in tourism and is a certified Divemaster with international certification in rescue and first aid. He has been part of the naturalist school since its founding and currently works as a divemaster and tour guide in Apoyo Lagoon. He has participated as part of the logistics team preparing dives for marine environmental impact studies. He participated in a youth leadership course with the Rotary Foundation in Costa Rica and has collaborated with SAMU LAB in the production of aromatic coils. He has participated in oral communication and virtual platform training, and has worked as a teacher for several years in adult literacy programs. He has participated in the Environment and Agriculture workshop for indigenous men and women and is certified in the "Communicating the Value of Biodiversity" course. He currently trains groups of children and young naturalists in various rural communities in Nicaragua. In addition, I participated in the Hope in Action course, which was conducted by the Jane Goodell Institute in 2024, and I have carried out local tours (naturalist tours and bird watching) in Apoyo Lagoon.

M. Sc. Heydi María Herrera-Rosales

Heydi María Herrera-Rosales is a Field Biologist (UNAN León - Nicaragua), with Master's studies in Conservation and Management of Wildlife (UNA Heredia - Costa Rica). She has been part of a specialized field consulting team on biodiversity, ornithology, and wildlife management (reptiles) for management plans of protected areas in southeastern Nicaragua and bordering protected areas to the south with Costa Rica and to the north with Honduras in the Bosawas Reserve. Her field experience in research, planning, and implementation has allowed her to teach courses on protected areas and their management challenges. She has participated in the development of management plans for various bordering protected areas with Costa Rica and the Biosphere Reserve of southeastern Nicaragua, as part of a professional, multidisciplinary field team. She has prepared research proposals, advised theses, and taught courses on biodiversity assessment and research methods. She has provided national and international training to park rangers from different protected areas and community field assistants in the areas where she has conducted research. She has organized international courses based in Nicaragua and collaborated with professors from international study programs. She participated in wildlife breeding projects in rural areas of Río San Juan (considering Building upon existing programs and projects in Costa Rica focused on iguanas, butterflies, and river turtles, these pioneering projects were community-led and implemented the regulations in place at the time. They also involved fieldwork collecting wildlife data in protected and unprotected wilderness areas for conservation purposes and to assess the provision of environmental services. She has participated as a visiting researcher in ornithology at Yosemite National Park and the South Sierra Research Station in the USA. She has also worked in Doña Ana National Park in Spain, focusing on public management of protected areas; in Manu National Park in Peru through the Office of Territorial Studies (OET); and in Celestún Reserve in Mexico, focusing on wetlands, communities, environmental education, and wildlife. In Costa Rica, she developed community-based environmental education programs that included wildlife management and interpretation of private wilderness areas. She has advised students on their research theses, is a member of the Costa Rican Ornithological Association (AOCR), is a certified assistant in bird banding and extraction by the North American Banding Council, and is a member of the Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots Institute. She is a graduate of The Naturalism School and has received formal training in Environmental Leadership Development, approved by the University of El Salvador (USAL) in Argentina. She currently works with The Naturalism School, educating and sharing knowledge about nature with children, youth, and adults, using the field as a classroom. She has also received training in Inclusive Ecotourism Experience Design through the ENAC Continuing Technical Training program and in Inclusive Tourism in Chile. This training encompasses infrastructure design based on international standards, attitudinal development, and the interpretation and/or creation of inclusive materials accessible to all people, regardless of physical, sensory, or cognitive abilities. She has been responsible for interpreting trails adapted for visual and motor disabilities in Costa Rica.

Lic. Sonia Mota Gaitán 

Sonia Mota Gaitan ecologist with a postgraduate degree in Environmental Education and Evaluation of Programs and Projects, academic studies were carried out in Nicaragua, I have worked as a consultant in capacity building projects, Follow-up, supervision and monitoring of socio-environmental projects funded by the European Union, Follow-up and Monitoring of Environmental Management Programs in road construction and geothermal, these processes were developed with Public and Private institutions such as the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Ministry of Energy and Minas, Caribbean Consortium. was coordinator of the Resilience Project against climate change, in the Peñas Territory Blancas, BOSAWAS, Nicaragua with AACID funds and the Río-Escalante Chacocente Wildlife Refuge, in addition, technical and consultation activities were coordinated to the population of the communities of the conservation and development areas of the Cosiguina Volcano Natural Reserves, Peñas Blancas and Cerro Cumaica Cerro Alegre. I was a Research Assistant for the study of relative abundance of the mammal taxon carried out at the Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge with the organization Friends of the Earth. I published an undergraduate thesis conducting "a study on the Ecological Characterization of Quassia amara and Smilax sp in the Lupe and the Filos Rio San Juan Nicaragua, Didactic Guide for the implementation of Environmental Education at the primary level and memories of the results of the AACID Project.
